Block Island Affordable Housing

For decades, the Block Island Housing Board has been at the forefront of tackling the island’s housing challenges. Building on the legacy of the grassroots organization, Block Island Economic Development (BIED), the Housing Board has continued the mission of creating affordable housing. BIED spearheaded the development of 16 low-income rental units and built and sold 39 single-family homes. The Town Council established the Housing Board in 2002 to continue this vital work.
Thanks to a dedicated income stream from a 1% seasonal rental tax, and the generosity of families who have donated or sold land below market value, the Housing Board has added nine more homes to our roster of affordable units. Our vision and work continue with the planned development of 16 new units off West Side Road.
The need for affordable housing and the stability it brings to our community has been embraced by all sectors of the island. The Town Council, Planning and Zoning Boards, the Housing Initiative, and the Housing Board are all working together to solve Block Island’s housing needs, one home at a time.
